6 Advanced Design Tips For Exciting Art

Excerpt from my, How to Think like an Artist Lecture.

You’re artistic, crafty, gifted, talented, whatever title you favor, like me, you’re a hands-on creative who loves making exciting art. Being a veteran member of this inspired group, it’s likely you already apply some of these design concepts in your work and in your everyday life. My intention here is to bring to light the increased value of purposefully incorporating these ideas in all of your artistic endeavors.

Stand-out glass art is the result of careful planning and mindful execution. Yes, it takes forethought. But once you see the incredible benefits a little preparation can bring, you’ll actually enjoy the process as much as I do.

Elements of good design that’ll take your glass artwork to the next level.

1. Rule of thirds.

This rule refers to the way the artistic composition of a piece of art is planned and laid out. Begin by dividing the project shape into three even pieces vertically and horizontally. Think of it like the lines of an imaginary tic-tact-toe board are superimposed over the project. Then place design elements along the imaginary lines, or better yet where two lines intersect. This placement creates desirable tension that engages the viewer and therefore holds their attention much longer.

Unless the design is geometric, avoid placing design elements in the center of the artwork. This type of symmetry creates a calming setting that’s easily ignored.

Rule of thirds.

2. Work in odd numbers.

When designing your pattern include an odd number of design elements. If you’re drawing flowers, have 3, 5 or 7 blossoms. This pleasing setup meets the viewer’s expectation, plus it amps up the tension and the repeat adds continuity to the overall design.

Work in odd numbers.

3. Include a focal point.

Every design can benefit from having a focal point. The focal point can be literal and pictorial like a bird or tree. Or it can be abstract like a specific design element, an unexpected shape, a field of contrasting color or an unusual texture. Focal points anchor the viewer to the art. They lure them in and invite them to stay awhile and look around to see how the focal point relates to the remainder of the artwork.

Include a focal point.

4. Place design elements in a triangular fashion.

Placing design elements in a triangular pattern creates a visual flow that encourages the viewer’s eyes to move around the design. Your artist guidance, in the form of strategically placed design elements, is a personal invitation to interact and communicate with the viewer. That’s powerful stuff!

Place elements in a triangle.

5. Repeat shapes, elements, and patterns.

If you use a shape, design element or pattern in one place consider repeating it two more times. For example, if a circle appears in one place, add two more. This level of planning shows your commitment to your design and the confidence you have in your work. Plus, it adds continuity that raises the sophistication level of the work as a whole.

6. Repeat colors.

Repeat colors.

Color plays an important role in the visual impact of art. It sets the tone and mood for the work. It also unifies the piece. You can increase the dramatic impact of your work by repeating colors at least three times. This adds continuity and shows the artist’s higher level of seriousness and commitment to the art.

When selecting colors plan to use multiple shades of the same color, like yellow, sunflower yellow, light amber, medium amber and dark amber in combination to create shading and add contrast.

Small changes have a BIG impact!

When you stop to think about it, it’s likely you’re using many of these concepts every day. When you decorate the coffee table you arrange three candles in a corner, not in the middle. The candles are likely three different heights that visually forms a triangle. You selected candle colors that are repeated in your decor.

Now, put it all together. Purposely apply these simple design tips when making your glass art and you’ll see a wonderful increase in the beauty and desirability of your finished artwork.

New Glass Fusing Premium Videos are Coming!

September is here and I am working feverishly in my studio and in my office to get an exciting  new project launched for you. I’m hopeful it will be ready by the end of this month. Being the right brained person I am, I’m juggling several different big tasks at one time. Sometimes it seems I’m not getting anywhere. Then all of a sudden things miraculously come together and WOW! I have a polished new offering to show and share.

Truth is, I’ve been planning this for more than a year. I’m really excited to tell you all about my new Glass Fusing Premium Video series. However, it’s not a competed package yet so the details about the membership levels has to wait for now. Though it seems I’ve been a quieter online lately, I assure you I’m firing my kilns regularly to bring you sparkling new, fun-to-make projects you will love.

You may know, Joe and I owned a stained glass gallery and retail store for 20 years. In the store we sold supplies, and we taught classes. We also produced and installed commission glass art for residences and public buildings. I enjoyed the daily interaction I had with fellow glass enthusiasts. I loved getting feedback on my creations from our clients and students.

Now, by design, I’m a full time studio artist working alone in my private studio. I love the artistic freedom it gives me to spend my days being a productive designer. I create when my muse strikes and not by the clock. I’m able to keep artist office hours too. You won’t get an email from me 9 am on a Monday morning. It’s more likely to arrive at 9 pm on a Thursday or Friday night after studio time.

I’d like your help!

There is an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes tasks that have to be completed before I can launch my new videos. And so I’m asking you, my fellow glass lover for help. Would you share your thoughts and give me feedback on some new graphic designs I want to share on my website and in my new eBooks?

Which glass fusing graph do you like best? Does the whimsical color version or the simple black and white one make you happy?

There is no right or wrong answer here. I thought it would be fun for you to help me shape the building blocks of my new videos and new eBooks.

#1 – 96 COE

For me, I’m an artist first and fabricator second. Color is my life. I don’t follow the crowd. I trailblazer forward without looking back. The color graph engages my fun loving visual learning mind.

I became interested in glass fusing because I was excited about the variety of beautiful art I could make. I learned about the technical aspects and restrictions later. It’s fun to think, my love for art made me an unlikely scientist who literally runs her own crazy experiments.

#2 – 96 COE

I’m aware that many glass enthusiasts have a different approach. You’re a fabricator first and artist second. You fell in love with glass fusing because you’re drawn to the dependability of the technical aspects. Plus, you get a thrill out of melting glass in a kiln to make amazing pieces of art. I get you. The simplicity of having your information delivered clearly in black and white is comforting.

I’ll also post these images on Facebook. Please click over there and vote for your favorite ones.

Here’s another comparison I’d like your feedback on.

Believe it or not, I don’t have a logo. After thirty five years as a working professional in the art business I thought it was time to change that.

Which one do you like best?

#1 Yellow Square Logo
#2 Colorful Round Logo

Thank you in advance for your help and feedback.

Don’t miss out! Make sure you sign up for my newsletter and follow my blog to get my new premium video series launch announcements and special insider invitations.

As always, it’s fun to hang out with you. Thank you for including me in your busy day.

More exciting news to come soon.

Fused Glass Sculptures Made Easy

What does sculptural fused glass mean anyway?

Sculptural fused glass is the creation of three-dimensional forms that rise above a flat plane. Artists create 3-D works by using multiple methods and techniques with complete freedom of materials and process.

Sounds exciting, right? All you have to do is stand your art up and it’s miraculously sculptural. Sure, you can do that. The word “sculptural” sounds exotic. Add it to any piece of art and suddenly it has a mysterious aura surrounding it, and a significantly higher perceived value. But like most really exceptional work that looks easy, there’s more to making impressionable art than just erecting a flat piece of fused glass.

The real difference between art and craft is the depth of immersion the creator puts into the creation of their art.

Hobbyists copy. They follow outlined directions and build pretty pieces according to a pre tested recipe. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with doing that. Hobbyists want to know they’ll be successful and have beautiful results. Especially after all the time and money they’ve spent on a pastime.

I’m a hobbyist when it comes to other popular activities like singing, flower arranging and astronomy. That’s how we learn. By following the pros and picking up their tricks, we learn how to make things we’re proud of and admire.

And if you become hooked, maybe you take your hobby a step further. You try new techniques and experiment by mixing techniques or combining ideas that inspire you. This is the threshold of advanced learning and the blossoming of self-discovery. You wonder, what can I do? What can I make? How far can I go? And the real question is, what am I capable of, artistically?

Hobbyists often start a hobby to relax and enjoy quiet time. They are content to stay in the shallows where it’s safe and they are successful. And that’s admirable.

Artists, on the other hand, take their commitment more seriously. They’re drawn to a medium by an invisible magnet. From the start they’re compelled to learn as much as possible about that art form. They have every intention of progressing, to work on bigger, better, more advanced projects. They head for the deep end without looking back and, sink or swim, give it all they have.

What does this have to do with sculptural fused glass?

Sculptural fused glass is the product of such artists. They’re the ones who go above and beyond. They challenge convention and push boundaries. You may think it takes extensive experience and an impressive glass studio to be one of those pioneers. You’d be wrong. Your most valuable assets are a positive attitude,

insatiable curiosity, and a fearless willingness to try. Just try. Trying is worthy of celebration and cheers.

How to get started.

I recommend making small 2 inch x 2 inch samples using different, new techniques that intrigue you. This gives you construction and firing experience with these new methods to see how they fire in your kiln. Then consider mixing methods that you’d usually do independently. Take these component pieces and cut them up. Then put them back together in a new way.

Slump plain clear fusible glass over molds in unique ways. Try combining different shapes to make sculptural groupings all your own. Again, start small. You can always take a successful project larger. Once you have a winning combo slump your component pieces the same way.

Take notes and pictures so you can repeat your successes and learn from mistakes.

Your biggest obstacle is likely you. Get out of your own way. Start small. Make tiny changes. Results are results. They don’t have to be monstrous to have enormous value.

If you’ve come this far in your craft, if you’re continually seeking inspiration, knowledge, and community, I believe you have it in you to create your own unique sculptural fused glass.

Want to jump start your sculptural glass fusing? Join me Tuesday August 23, 2022 for my Fused Glass Sculpture Webinar.

Register now. Only 1 seat left. The class is held in my private studio in Wesley Chapel, Florida. All class materials are included.

Sculptural fused glass is the creation of three-dimensional forms that rise above a flat plane. Artists create 3-D works by using multiple methods and techniques with complete freedom of materials and process.

You’re invited to join me for this intense workshop held in my private studio in Wesley Chapel, Florida.

In this comprehensive class you’ll learn how to design, build and creatively display multiple stunning pieces of art that reflect your personal style.

You’ll push the boundaries glass imposes. You’ll use innovative approaches to design and combine multiple advanced techniques to construct original sculptural art. You’ll enjoy: the one-on-one instruction, making large scale projects, the well-equipped classroom, and the intimate class size.

Its hard-core fusing in a nurturing, relaxed environment. You’ll love the concentrated, in-depth study and creative momentum you’ll gain while actively producing nonstop, for four consecutive days. You’ll also learn how to design and build custom art glass displays that enhance your original work.

You’ll leave class with several completed sculptures, a working knowledge of kiln operation and custom project-specific firing guides. You’ll have the design confidence and hands-on experience to rise above and take your work to the next level.

This is the turning point workshop you’ve been waiting for! Let’s get fired up!
