Upscale Fusing-What Does it Mean?

Upscale Fusing web Fancy Feathers by Lisa Vogt 2016

You might wonder, what does upscale fusing mean?

Upscale fusing is the intentional pairing of complimentary design ideas to elevate the overall visual power of your artwork. It’s a simple concept that’s easily implemented. Combine this theory with your artistic flare, and you’ll rapidly advance your glass work from craft to fine art.

In the following examples I’ll show you how I put these ideas into practice.

Upscale Fusing Lisa Vogt 4

Blue Beauty

Blue Beauty is a wonderful example of using visual texture to lure the viewer in and hold their attention. The woven center, made with iridized black strips, creates a focal point that intrigues the viewer. Then the linier band along the bottom invites the eye to move over and around the rest of the art. The tight linier pattern is also a welcome contrast to the openness of the background. Here, the airy color palate of blues and greens playfully call for further reflection.

3 Grape Tray

Grape Tray

Grape Tray is terrific example of the power of shape to engage the viewer. This is a simple design, but the unique profile combined with the clever representation of the heavily patterned glass is a winning combination.

Fancy Feathers

Fancy Feathers is an example of reinforcing the focal point, the flashy peacock feather, by including a background that enhances the key subject. Here, I use a subtle pattern that represents the tight feathers that run along a peacock’s neck to add interest and purpose to the background. This is also a great example of going out of bounds by designing a unique shape that viewers don’t anticipate but love.

Lock & Key

Lock and Key is a fun example of how delivering a message can create a more intimate bond between the art and viewer. Here the recognizable images, the lock and key invite the viewer to linger longer to consider what deep message the artist might be trying to convey.

Upscale Fusing Lisa Vogt 5

Amber Round

Amber Round is an excellent example of using color and pattern to seduce the viewer. Here the sweeping lines, contrasted by the solid black lines is a lively combination that’s irresistible.

1 Golden Aspen

Golden Aspen

Golden Aspen has it all. The striking imagery, embossed texture, tower style profile and custom glass pedestal give it a gallery quality, sculptural presence that viewers are drawn to. It’s the innovative combination of visual treats that make this piece of art memorable.

The individual techniques used to make these projects are easy. It’s the pairing of different methods that make these pieces of art exceptional. The work, and fun are in the planning and the execution.

On your next project, try blending two or three of your favorite techniques. The results will be nothing short of amazing.

Tropical Fish Tray How-to

40 - Copy

Hello Spring! Welcome sunny, fun filled days with this shimmering tropical fish tray.

The most wonderful characteristic of glass is its generous nature. If you open yourself up to discovery, glass continuously offers the curious artist brand new opportunities to be creative. I’ve been working with this medium for more than 30 years now! And it still amazes me that a simple, new twist on old techniques can still give me a huge thrill and excite me as much as a carefree kid on spring break.  vacation.

Due to the number of projects I make, I have a lot of scrap glass. So, when I find a new, clever way to make something beautiful with left over material, I get fired up. And best of all, the reliable techniques used here are fun and easy to apply. It’s the unusual pairing of multiple design methods that makes this tropical fish tray so attractive and enjoyable to build.

Don’t let the complex looking design scare you. The different techniques I used to create this bright reef dweller are broken down into easy, manageable steps.

 Let’s get started.

Use the pattern as a guide to cut the base layer out of clear glass. Grind the glass to improve the shape and remove any sharp edges. Clean the glass with water and then dry it with a towel. Set the clear base aside.

3

Number the pattern pieces on 2 copies of the fish pattern. This will simplify the assembly later. Cut the pattern up with scissors. Use a glue stick to hold the paper pattern pieces on the glass. Cut the glass as close to the pattern as possible. Remove the excess glass with running pliers and grozing pliers. Use the same method to cut and shape the fish scales.

7

Save your scrap pieces to make the open and airy background pieces of the tray.

11

Grind the cut fish pieces to remove any sharp edges. Clean the ground glass with water and then dry the pieces with a towel. Arrange the ground fish pieces on the clear base layer. Glue the pieces to the base with fuser’s glue. Let the glue dry before moving to the next step. Otherwise, the glass will slide around when you apply the frit.

15

Using a spoon, pour fine Cobalt blue frit on the fish. Gently sweep it into the gaps with a small paint brush. This adds contrast and detail to the design. Run a line of frit down the top and bottom fins. Use a narrow paint brush to make a scalloped design in the frit. Remove any excess frit with the brush.

Sift medium blue opal powder frit on the fish head, tail and small fin. Clean up the edges and make them crisp with a small brush. Sprinkle medium white frit on the head and tail. Place a small scrap of black on the head to make the mouth. Arrange a premade dot on the head for the eye.

Making eyes. I have a little container full of fused glass dots that I pull from when making projects that have eyes. To make dots I cut ¼ inch squares out of white glass. I cut 1/8 inch squares out of a black backed dichroic glass. The small dichroic square is stacked on the white glass and glass is fired to a full fuse temperature using the guide below. The small pieces plump and ball-up during firing. They make super cute, expressive eyes for a variety of projects.

Cut the border base layer out of clear glass. Cut a second layer out of white glass. Stack the white strips on the clear strips.

24

Cut ¼ inch wide strips of glass out of clear glass and colors that complement the fish colors. Using mosaic nippers trim the strips into small squares.

Arrange the glass border and the assembled fish on a primed, or a fiber paper lined kiln shelf. Place the cut squares and scrap on the kiln shelf around the border and fish. For nice, individual round shapes make sure there’s adequate space between each of the little pieces. (If they, touch you’ll end up with ovals and wiggly worms.) Note: It’s not necessary to grind the scrap before firing. The organic shapes they create add softness to the design.

26

Yes, laying out all of these tiny pieces is tedious. Tough it out. The dots and dashes made from the scrap are worth the extra effort. I promise you’ll love the variety of shapes and increased selection you have to choose from when you assemble the tray background. Plus, you can use the extras dots and dashes in future projects.

29

Fire the glass to a full fuse temperature using the guide below.

Place the fused fish inside the fused border on a primed or fiber paper lined kiln shelf. Fill in the open background space with the dots and dashes made from scrap. Make sure the pieces are in contact with each other, the border and the fish to connect the entire project together.

31

Dots and Dashes bowl bonus project. This adorable bowl was inspired by the fun, organic shapes made by fusing the randomly shaped scraps left over from cutting the fish. I had so much fun laying out the fish background, I couldn’t stop myself from doing more. This little gem is so simple and super fun. Just draw a 6 inch circle on shelf paper. Arrange leftover dots and dashes inside the pencil line. Fill the space. Make sure the pieces of glass are in contact with each other to connect the whole circle.

54

Fire the assembled pieces to a tack fuse temperature using the guide below.

Carefully place the tacked fish tray on a ceramic mold. Place the small bowl on a ceramic mold. Slump the tray and bowl using the project specific guide below. This gentle slumping guide works well for pieces that are delicate and have open spaces in the background. The temperature is lower than usual, and the hold is longer. This conservative slump guide ensures these glass projects retain their size and shape, without stretching, during heating and slumping.

37

This project evolved as I went along. I started with the freeform fish design. Then I liked the idea of incorporating an open background that mimicked bubbles. I was concerned, strength wise that the tacked dots might not be strong enough to support the weight of the fish. That’s when the border idea came to me. The border would give the project a nice visual frame and add support to the overall tray.

In the end, I’m happy with the unexpected mix of techniques and the way the tray came out. Design wise, I like how the clean straight lines of the white border contrast the bright, fluid background. And I’m pleased with the way the stylized fish brings uplifting, aquatic springtime activities and memories to my mind. I hope you have as much fun as I did making a Tropical Fish Tray of your own.

Spring Egg How-to

Egg 1a

Colorful eggs are a cheery symbol of spring. The oval shape is simple yet elegant which makes it a terrific profile for decorating. Best of all, this little darling can be used to brighten your home year-after-year.

Sometimes, it’s fun to start a project with a blank canvas. I leave expectations at the door and let my materials inspire my design. This relaxed approach allows me to enjoy the purity of the process, and happily get lost in my work.

You can get happily lost in your work too. I’ll share how I made my design, but I encourage you to add your own touches. Change the pattern a bit to make something that reflects your personal taste and design style.

Egg 2

Egg How-to:

Cut an oval shaped base out of clear glass. Cut strips of opal glass colors, of your choice, for the design layer. Cut a variety of widths for a more visually interesting combination. Arrange the strips on the clear base. Tuck twisted cane between some of the cut glass strips for an airy, three-dimensional look. Cut the glass strips and twisted cane to size. Mosaic nippers can be used to cut the cane.

Egg 3

Glue the design layer to the base layer with a small amount of fuser’s glue.

To make the accent layer, cut murrine rods into ¼ inch long pieces with mosaic nippers. Arrange the murrine on the design layer to make springy flowers and cute dots. Add twisted cane for a more elaborate pattern. You can also include stingers, noodles, nuggets and dichroic glass bits to liven up your design.

Egg 4

Full fuse the assembled project using the firing guide below.

Egg 6

Slump the fused glass egg in a mold using the firing guide below.

Here’s another fun design idea made by Niki’s creative boyfriend, Matt Vanschaik.

Egg 9

Enjoy your cheery, hand-decorated egg all season long.

Spring egg: 8 inch x 11 inch oval

Base: Clear glass

Design Layer: Assorted opal colors & twisted cane

Accent Layer: Nipped murrine & twisted cane

Garden Party Flower Bowl How-to

Garden Party

Spring is here. Colorful flowers brighten your day and make everything better. The best part about these cheerful blooms is they’ll stay fresh and vibrant forever.

This airy bowl is made with 6 flower clusters and 12 leaves. Don’t let the number of flowers or the intricacy of the design stop you from making fewer flowers and a smaller bowl. This project is about having fun and being productive while working with a medium you love. Plus, with different flower and leaf combinations you can make new groupings and create your own unique bowl pattern.

How to make the flower petals and leaves:

EPSON MFP image

Select three pretty opal colors for the flowers. Cut 12 flower petals out of each of the three colors for a total of 36 flower petals. Then cut 36 petal shapes out of clear glass. Grind the glass to improve the glass shapes. Stack the opal glass on the clear glass and set aside.

Pick an opal green for the leaves. Cut 12 leaves out of the green glass. Then cut 12 matching leaf pieces out of clear glass. Grind the glass to improve the shapes. Stack the green on the clear.

GP Fusing flower petals

Arrange the stacked flower petals and leaves on a kiln washed or fiber paper covered kiln shelf. Fire to a full fuse temperature using the guide below.

Making the flowers:

GP Fused Flowers

Place a fusing compatible glass nugget on a primed or fiber paper covered kiln shelf. Arrange 6 flower petals evenly around the nugget. Repeat to make 6 flowers. Make sure each petal is contact with the nugget in the center to ensure they stick together when fired. Fire the flowers to a tack fuse temperature using the guide below.

Using a pencil, draw a 12 inch circle on a primed or fiber paper covered kiln shelf. Place the fused leaves inside the circle. Arrange the fused flowers on top of the leaves. Fire to a tack fuse temperature.

Place the assemble project in a ceramic mold and slump the glass using the guide below.

GP Slump

The wonderful thing about this free-form design is you can make this project smaller, or with fewer flowers and still get beautiful results. Use your imagination. The possibilities are endless.

Enjoy your beautiful, springy floral bowl.

Art Makes You Feel Better

DSCN4138
Here’s a peek at one of my new designs.

Creating lifts your spirit and gives you a more positive perspective and hopeful outlook on the future.

You look to me for artistic motivation and inspiration. I count on your for validation that my teaching efforts make a difference in your artistic growth. We need each other. We’re all emotionally healthier and happier as a result of the relationship we share.

It’s impossible to ignore the health threat we’re facing worldwide.

I’m no mental health expert, but I am an emotionally sensitive human being. During this COVID-19 virus crisis, I want to take the best care I can of myself and my family which includes you, my art glass family.

I’m just an artist trying to process and deal with our countries dire situation. I worry about how it will affect me, my family and you in the days ahead. In these uncertain times, the stress of the unknown can lead to fatigue, poor health and depression. And so, I’m checking in to ask, what are you doing to take care of yourself and make yourself feel better?

How do rational people handle disaster? I don’t have an answer. I can tell you how I’m getting through.

I have a self-imposed deadline to make 2 new videos for release this spring. And so, I’ve been working in my glass studio designing and building projects for my new instructional videos. My deadline approached, but inspiration eluded me. I was a dry well. No new design ideas, no themes, or video titles came to mind. I showed up for work and went into my glass studio everyday anyway.

The place is magical because one day, when I least expected, ideas flooded in. I had really good ideas, fun ideas I couldn’t wait to create. I starting cutting glass and building glass art that made me glow inside. During that time, I kept up with the growing bad news, but in bite size doses that made me feel informed, but not overwhelmed.  I’ve created several new projects that I am really excited about sharing with you very soon.

But the real positive here is that the act of creating art gave me some relief from the bombardment of gloomy predictions. The bad news didn’t go away, but having a breather gave me a more positive perspective and hopeful outlook on our future.

Let me ask again. What are you doing to take care of yourself and feel better?

Here’s another peek.

Here are some suggestions:

Break glass and make fun pieces of fused glass art. Just do it. Forget structure or planning. Get your hands dirty and remember the pure joy of creating.

Take a long walk. Get fresh air between your ears. Listen to the birds. Enjoy flowering plants.

Read a book. Maybe try a new genre like science-fiction or thriller.

Start a new hobby. I’ve always wanted to crochet a scarf.

Paint something. It can be a canvas or a repurposed piece of furniture or a wall.

Plant a garden. If you don’t have seeds weed the garden. If you don’t have a yard visit a famous garden online.

Learn a new techie skill. I want to learn how to draw freehand sketches on the computer with a pen instead with nots and a mouse. So, I’m researching different programs and watching tutorial YouTube videos on the subject to narrow down which program will work best for me.

Practice yoga outside. Meditate.

Reach out to family and friends you know are struggling emotionally and possibly financially. Give them your time and understanding.

Count your blessings. Live in the present. Take time to appreciate all the good, positive aspects of your life.

We’re all in this together. Your good metal, emotional and physical health is important to all of us. I count on you to take care of me, as much as I take care of you. Now, get going. Do something today to lift your spirits.

To keep my positive energy strong, I’m heading out to my glass studio to make more beautiful pieces of art.

I’m here for you to help keep your artistic spirit alive and well.

Cheers!

Lisa
