Taking it Outside

This summer Joe and I went to New Your State for a week long family vacation. It was nice to leave flat, humid Florida in favor of the majesty of green mountains and the revitalizing power of a lakeside retreat.

Of course, I packed my camera. I could do with less clothes. My camera was definitely going. Plus, I took my new, BIG lens to try to get a picture of bald eagles that nest nearby.

I love being outdoors capturing the natural splendors of nature with my camera. Wildlife and landscapes are among my favorite subjects. While in NY, Joe and I enjoy hiking to mountain peaks with expansive lake views. I especially like the trek when we have a dramatic photo destination to ease the burden of carrying my camera, lenses, and tripod. Itโ€™s also a real treat to relive my woodland experiences over again through my pictures when I share them with you.

This year we tried something different. We did several hikes to back country locations with waterfalls. It was hot. The trails were rocky and steep. But we were determined to find picturesque settings. I was looking for areas where the streams flowed down rocks like steps. And places where the stream changed direction causing the water to funnel into narrow channels increasing the visual drama of movement.

On every hike we stopped in several places along the way. Each one had its own features and special charm. But, in each location I was aware that one aura remained the same. Iโ€™d scramble down the slope, pick my way over the leaf padded forest floor and step over rocks to reach the stream bank. And there I was in awe again and again of the drumming rhythm of nature. It was a thrill to feel the rumble of the rushing water through the wet boulders beneath my boots. I was energized by the gentle touch of the cool mist each time it kissed my flushed cheeks.

The flowing motion of the water added a new, welcome opportunity to take pictures with an emotive aspect. We played around with my camera settings. I have to give Joe credit for my success. He had the patience to research how to create the soft look of the extended exposure I wanted with my specific camera. Me, I just wanted my camera set up to shoot what I envisioned. Kind of like having a pre-programmed kiln, but with a custom program. Or for you non-fusers, like a microwave with a preset defrost button. Iโ€™m sure you understand. I didnโ€™t want to be bothered with the tech stuff. Instead, I wanted to focus on being creative with the composition and lighting. You know, be the artist.

I really appreciate Joeโ€™s help and love that he loves to do research. When we reached the first site, we took several test pictures. We tried different camera settings until we found one that I liked. Once we had it, I wanted to make sure I could recreate the same amazing effects in the future. I wrote notes to myself on my phone so I could repeat the steps and then expand from there later.

For those of you who enjoy the technical aspects, Iโ€™ll briefly explain how we set up to capture the silky  cascading water that makes these pictures so captivating. I attached my camera to a tripod for stability and crisper focus. For these photo shoots, I set my camera aperture mode to F22. Then I switched to manual mode and set the shutter speed to 1 / 2.5. This worked well in subdued lighting under the canopy of trees. When I took pictures out in the open, without the shade of trees, my images came out a little over exposed, washed out and too light. If I were to take pictures on a sunny beach the F-stop settings would likely have to be adjusted. The shutter speed I used gave me enough movement and still retained the linear details of the falling water I wanted. With a shorter shutter speed the water didnโ€™t have a silky look. With a longer shutter speed the water became a solid white mass, it lost definition. Basically, the camera settings are movement and light sensitive.

What I learned about taking moving water pictures.

My pictures had a crisper focus when I used a tripod. I sat on the ground and propped my camera on my bent knew to take a few spur-of-the-moment pics. Most of them were blurry. The moving water looked fine, but the surrounding landscape was out-of-focus.

Make sure to focus the lens on something stationary like a rock or foliage. The water is moving so you donโ€™t have to focus on it. You want the surrounding subject matter to be as crisp and clear as possible. My solution is simple. I press my shutter button halfway down and focus on a rock near the waterfall. Then without letting it up, I move my camera lens, so the waterfall is the focal point in the frame. Then I press the button down the rest of the way to take the picture. Then the surrounding landscape is in focus and the water has a velvety shimmer.

Take more pictures than you think you need. Itโ€™s hard to tell if a shot is in focus or if the color is bright on the small camera screen. You can delete the duplicates after viewing them on a larger screen like a tablet of computer.

Once you have the shot you want, try changing your perspective. Get lower or higher for more dramatic images. Try different compositions. Place the waterfall off to one side. Turn the camera for a vertical layout.

Have fun! Get carried away. Plan extra time so you can stop and enjoy the treasures that appear unexpectedly around every corner.

Some of these suggestions are my artistic preferences. Theyโ€™re not hard rules. In fact Iโ€™m the one most likely to change them as I get better at this type of photography or if the setting is very different. Like suppose Iโ€™m taking pictures of flowing water in a snow covered setting. I imagine that would present its own challenges. But I do love a challenge and thankfully I have Joe to help me.

I hope you enjoyed my pictures and that they brought you a relaxing moment of peace and tranquility. I have several exciting wildlife pictures too. Iโ€™ll share those in another post soon.

Cheers!

Lisa

Advanced Techniques for Designing Exciting Fused Glass

When I step into my studio, I know the subject or focal point of the fused glass project I intend to make. I may plan to build a piece with a sailboat or something with a geometric pattern. Itโ€™s that basic plan that fuels my artistic actions. Making the subject is easy. But I donโ€™t stop there.

Consider the background space.

The background is equally, and possibly more important than the subject. How the background is handled can dramatically improve the power and appeal of a work of art. A good background enhances the focal point. It reinforces the subject with images or shapes that establish setting or create a mood that further support the artistโ€™s specific visual goals.

Evolution of a design background.

Letโ€™s examine a few fused glass designs together. Iโ€™ll show you how the addition of simple, complementary elements can sway the design direction. And how the choices you make can produce unique, exciting designs.

I start my design process with the specific subject I want to create. In this case I wanted to make succulent flowers. Notice how simple the succulent flower pattern is without a background design in place.

Succulents as seen in Simple Pleasures Glass Fusing with Lisa Vogt video

I could have used plain blue and green glass for the background to suggest an outdoor location. That would have worked fine. But, with a little more thought, creativity, and time I created a background that entirely changed my subject for the better. I used hand-made stencils along with powder frit to add a garden setting to my flowers. It worked. The subtle leafy pattern and hint of blue sky dramatically increase the charm and beauty of my finished bowl.

Buzzing Bees as seen in Simple Pleasures Glass Fusing with Lisa Vogt video

For my next design my focal point was bees. Itโ€™s such a simple yet bold subject that I could have easily executed it beautifully with a plain background. But plain isnโ€™t my style. I could have placed them in any number of settings. I thought about sitting them on top of flowers, or on the side of a beehive hanging from a tree limb. But at the time, the rich golden colors and angular geometry of a honeycomb appealed to me more.

Look at the bee pattern alone. Then look at it again in the completed piece. You have to admit the addition of the honeycomb background seriously increased the bees artistic influence on the finished piece of art. ย ย ย ย ย ย

Wine Glass as seen in Simple Pleasures Glass Fusing with Lisa Vogt video

Another simple design I favor is a wine glass. Itโ€™s graceful shape and promise of relaxing with good company make it dear to my heart. The problem is the basic design ย lacks personality. Its screaming for a creative treatment that takes us away to a picturesque retreat. This pattern is great for imagining different background settings and how they would change the artโ€™s mood. For example, picture a background with a fireplace and open book. Or how about a loaded cheese board with fruit or a sunny beach with palm trees. Better yet, make a dimly lit cave with a witches caldron and spider webs in the background. Each of these design ideas are easy to make. So thereโ€™s no excuse not to try it for yourself. And thereโ€™s no doubt that the life they would breath into the original design would make it better. ย ย ย ย

Wine Glass as seen in Simple Pleasures Glass Fusing with Lisa Vogt video

These examples illustrate the incredible impact the background has on your fused glass design. I hope Iโ€™ve given insight into my design process and simple ideas you can use to liven up your own artwork.

Knowing what you want to make is exciting. But donโ€™t let your imagination stop with the focal point. Do more. Customize the background to transform ordinary patterns into something special that reflects your unique and flourishing artistic style.

Endless Summer! Fish Plate

What better way to keep the warm, carefree days of summer flowing than with a fancy tropical fish plate. The cool thing about this brightly colored reef dweller is it combines easy cutting techniques along with a freestyle approach to assembly that make it fast, easy and fun to make.

Hereโ€™s how

Fish Plate How-To 12โ€ x 9โ€

  1. Using the pattern as a guide cut a base out of clear glass. Cut as much as possible by hand. Use a wet saw to cut the deep inside curves. If you donโ€™t have access to a saw, the base can be made up of pieces. Grind the base to remove sharp edges and improve the shape.
  2. Cut ยผโ€ wide strips of color glass for the fish body. I used both opal and transparent glass. Spread the glass out to create an interesting color arrangement.
  3. Use the pattern as a guide to cut the head and tail out of opal glass. Cut the fins out of transparent glass. Grind the glass as needed.
  4. Arrange the strips on the paper pattern between the head and tail pieces. Include a few pieces of twisted cane between the glass strips for a trendy detail. Mark the glass strips and cut them to size.
  5. Bend stringer in a candle for a fun wavy pattern.
  6. Stack the head, tail and fins on the base layer. Glue the cut glass to the base with fuserโ€™s glue. Add the eye and side fin.
  7. Detail the fish with an assortment of black and clear dichroic scrap and wavy stingers.
  8. Fire the fish to a full fuse temperature.
  9. Slump the fish into a shallow mold.
  10. Enjoy!

How to Make a Glass Sink Polishing Stand

Itโ€™s amazing how much art and engineering have in common. Art concepts are born from a small spark. But it takes hot, burning desire, coupled with ingenuity, to actually transform such obscure ideas into physical reality.

Thereโ€™s got to be an easier way.

Iโ€™ve been making fused glass sinks for years. In the beginning, I constructed them using the layered method. This type of construction has a beautiful, round finished edge when the fused glass comes out of the slumping mold.

It wasnโ€™t long before I expanded my techniques and started building sinks using the cast method. This sink style is much thicker. The glass comes out of the mold with a slightly texture edge. This type of sink construction requires grinding and polishing to make the edge smooth and shiny.

Sinks are advanced projects that involve a considerable amount of time to construct, a sizable amount of material and a skilled craftsman to complete successfully. When it comes time to cold-working your masterpiece, you want to feel confident that the job will go smoothly. And so it was our intention, to build consistency into this otherwise unstable task. Thatโ€™s why we modified a readily available carpenterโ€™s roller stand, into a customized sink support/guide that would provide us with reliable results time after time.

If it worked for me, itโ€™ll work for you.

This new, re-purposed tool significantly streamlined my workflow and improved my success rate. Hereโ€™s how you can make your own sink stand/guide.

Start with your standard, home improvement store variety roller stand. Remove the metal roller. It comes off easily by depressing two buttons, one on each end of the roller. The mechanism works similar to toilet paper roll holder. Cut a 2โ€ x 2โ€ block of wood to fit between the uprights. Secure the wood in place with wood screws, one on each end. Cover the surface of the wood with a strip of nylon, like the white cutting board used in your kitchen. The nylon holds up longer than the bare wood and it wonโ€™t scratch your glass as the edge becomes shinny. Hold the nylon strip in place with two wood crews. Be sure to countersink the screws so they donโ€™t come in contact with or damage your glass. Pre-drill two holes for the dowels behind the nylon strip. Press two hardwood dowels into the holes in the wooden base. These dowels serve as stops that help you maintain a consistent distance from the grinding wheel throughout the grinding and polishing process. Tip: Donโ€™t glue the dowels in place. They wear out quickly, and therefore will need to be replaced every few sinks.

Once you have one of these stands, youโ€™re certain to find multiple uses for it. So donโ€™t hesitate to add this handy tool to the supply of tools in your studio.

Supplies

Roller stand

Wood screws

2โ€ x 2โ€ strip of wood cut to size

1โ€- 1 ยฝโ€ wide strip of nylon cut to size

3/8โ€ thick hardwood dowel cut to size

5 Pro Tips for Making Fused Glass Sinks and Large Bowls

Artists are the most generous people I know. We love to share our passion. We all want to make a more dramatic and memorable impression with our art. One of the bests ways to accomplish this is to go bigger and make large scale pieces that stand out from the crowd.

But going bigger can be scary. You have to invest more time and material. And there are more design decisions to make. Itโ€™s a huge commitment and you want guarantees that the finished piece will exceed your expectations. Following are some fundamental tips thatโ€™ll greatly increase your success with all your fused glass artwork.

1 Measuring the Slumping Mold

It seems trivial, but this is where most craftsman go wrong. Everyone wants to make the largest fused glass disc possible. They then measure the mold from the outer rim to the outer rim and cut their glass circles accordingly. They wrongly assume the glass that rests on the top rim of the mold will follow the center of the fused glass disc as it slumps into the mold. The problem is the glass on the flat rim drags.

Therefore, it does not fall into the mold evenly. The result is a bowl with uneven height in the side walls. A lopsided bowl can be avoided simply by measuring across the inside of the mold and then cutting the glass ยผ to ยฝ inch smaller than that measurement. Yes, the bowl is slightly smaller. No one will notice. Theyโ€™ll be too busy admiring your beautifully crafted, uniform bowl with even side walls all the way around.

2 Durability is in the Design

When going larger itโ€™s important to design your art in such a way that the glass thickness is uniform throughout the entire piece of art. If you design the round disc with two glass layers on one side and four glass layers on the opposite side, youโ€™ll have unbalanced mass. This can cause the finished piece of art to break due to the stress of supporting its own weight. Instead, plan your design execution in advance to ensure you have the same number of glass layers across the entire disc. Small accents pieces decorating the top arenโ€™t a concern, provided theyโ€™re added in moderation.

3 Let it Shine

The beauty of glass is its transparency, and the attraction of glass fusing is our ability to mix transparent and opal materials, to create various color combinations and an infinite number of intricate patterns. The wonderful thing about going large is the extended size of the creative canvas. With more room, you have more opportunity to expand your design ideas and make a dynamic statement. So rather than fumble through, take time to plan a well thought out design. Consider including pre-tacked or fused glass components for added interest. Mix both transparent and opal glass to increase visible depth. The possibilities are endless.

4 Do Your Best Work

Donโ€™t cut corners. No excuses. If you think to ask, โ€œShould I recut or redo this?โ€ My answer is, โ€œYes.โ€ The more time and effort you put into each step will greatly improve the overall quality of your finished pieces. Fabrication and execution are equally as important as design esthetics. If you implement this approach, every piece you produce will be a masterpiece.

5 Fusing and Slumping

Slow it down. Larger usually also means thicker. Youโ€™ll dramatically increase your firing success rate by slowing down both the fusing schedule and the slumping schedule. I fire my large pieces at 300 degrees per hour and hold several times on the way up to 1465 degrees to fuse, and 1220 degrees to slump. I anneal the glass at 960 degrees for 180 minutes, for both fusing and slumping, and then slowly drop the temperature down to room temperature. By being conservative with the firing schedules, I achieve consistently beautiful results every time. You can too!
