American Spirit Plates How-To

In support of our great country and you my creative family and friends, I’m sharing 2 American themed red, white and blue plates.

I love having an assortment of fused glass pieces on hand to display in my home. These bold glass pieces add a colorful touch to your counter or coffee table. Read on, and you’ll see that these decorative pieces are fast, easy and fun to make.

This rectangular dish looks simple, but the bold colors and elongated shape make a dramatic statement when this bright beauty is on display.

American Pride Plate by Lisa Vogt

American Pride Plate, 7” x 14”

Cut a clear base layer to fit your slumping mold. This dish measures 7” x 14”.

Cut ½” squares out of clear glass and white glass. Cut 1” squares out of red glass and blue glass. I used opal glass, but transparent looks terrific too.

Arrange the squares on the clear base layer. Fire the glass to a full fuse temperature using the firing guide below. Slump the fused glass into a shallow mold using the guide below. Done!

American Flag Plate by Lisa Vogt

Red, White and Blue Flag Plate, 10” x 10”

The combination of rich colors along with the soft profile, make this plate a wonderful addition to any collection, and you’ll love how easy it is to make.

Cut a 10 inch square out of clear glass for the base layer. Cut a graceful curve off each side.

Sketch your flag design on paper. Cut the paper pattern up and use it as a guide to cut the glass pieces that make up the design layer. Grind the cut glass as needed to remove any sharp edges and to improve the shapes.

Arrange the design layer on the clear base layer. Fire the glass to a full fuse temperature using the firing guide below. Slump the fused glass into a shallow mold using the guide below.

Custom pendant lights are a wonderful way to add a custom, personalized touch to your family’s hub, the kitchen. In this special event I’ll share treasured fun and creative family time in my glass studio with you. You’ll follow the design and construction of two beautiful pendant lights as my daughter and son-in-law dive deep into the world of glass fusing to create beautiful fixtures to light up the loving center of their new home.

In this concentrated, live event you will learn how to make 2 stylish fused glass pendant lights from start to finish. We will show you step-by-step how to create an attractive design, how to cut large glass circles, and how to create three-D design elements that pop. In addition, I’ll share project specific firing guides I developed to successfully fuse, tack and drape pieces with an intricate free-form shape.

As a bonus, we’ll share images of our ugly, but lovable, test piece. You’ll learn why we didn’t like it and how we adjusted the project assembly and firings to achieve the results we wanted.

Plus, we will show you how easy it is to drill the holes needed to accommodate the light fixtures. And we’ll demonstrate how to assemble and install the lights.

Creative Slumping – Drop Out Vase How-to

Excerpt from Creative Slumping Webinar 

My favorite thing about glass fusing is its limitless possibilities. Beyond the basics, there are countless ways to work with this medium and get surprisingly unique results every time. There’s always something new to try and learn.

Another thing I love about glass is the three-dimensional aspect. We have the power to change the shape of our art and take it from flat to fabulous. Drop out molds are great props you can use to express your artistic flare in exciting, new creative ways.

What makes drop molds different?

When fused glass is slumped into a typical mold, we retain the original design unchanged but now with a gentle three-dimensional shape. Whereas the process of reshaping glass by allowing it to fall through the hole in a drop out ring changes and adds to the visual features of the design. As the glass drops through the ring the design elements blend and stretch which gives the illusion of movement in the finished project.

Drop Out Vase How-to

Drop-out-mold vases are tricky. Every kiln fires differently. The type of glass used and the way the project is assembled both affect the way the glass falls through the hole. Taking detailed notes is especially important if you want consistent results time-after-time.

Design Tip: As the glass falls through the mold it stretches. Because dropping glass adds detail to the pattern, I’ve found that when it comes to the vase design less is more. Keep the design simple. An overcomplicated pattern makes the vase look clumsy and heavy instead of graceful and light.

To make the glass. 

Cut five (5) 7-inch glass circles. Vary the design on the layers. Stack the 5 layers in the kiln on a primed or fiber covered shelf. Wrap the stacked glass with Thin Fire fiber paper and 1/8” thick fiber paper to maintain the desired thickness and shape during the fusing process. Hold the fiber paper ring in place with kiln posts.

Fire to a full fuse temperature using the guide below.

To Make the glass base and riser.
Base: Cut two 4-inch circles, one black glass, one clear dichroic glass. Stack and full fuse.
Riser: Cut two 1 ½ inch circles out of clear glass. Stack and full fuse.

Drop out mold set up. 
The round, ceramic drop out mold is 9-inch-wide with a 5-inch-wide hole. Cover the mold top with 1/8-inch thick fiber paper. This keeps the glass from slipping off the mold as it drops. If handled carefully, the fiber paper can be reused over and over.

Support the mold with four, 5-inch-tall kiln posts. Cover the kiln bottom, below the glass with fiber paper.
Heat the glass to drop it through the mold using the drop ring firing guide below.
Kilns fire differently. Test fire these guides. Take notes and make adjustments as needed.

**These firing guides are for System 96. They work equally as well with other COEs

Cutting the rim. 
Cut the rim off with the 2-inch EverRun Sintered Diamond Slitter and Dremel. Grind and polish the rim. Glue the vase on the riser and base with E6000 adhesive.

5 Quick Holiday Favorites to Brighten Your Home

These darling plates are great for table decorations or for serving sweet treats. The dishes photographed here measure 10-inch by 10-inch. But these smart designs also look terrific in 12-inch or 8-inch sizes. Feel free to adjust the size to fit any slumping mold you may have.

At this over scheduled time of year, we’re all longing for the peace and tranquility we associate with more studio time. Well here’s your excuse to log in more hours with your glass cutter and kiln. Don’t let these charming projects fool you; these flashy little beauties are fun, fast and easy to make. Plus, they make great gifts for family and friends.

Celebrate the season.

To make these seasonal plates, cut a 10-inch by 10-inch piece of clear fusible glass for the base layer. Select your design and glass colors. Cut the design layer using the specific pattern you selected as a guide. Glue the design layer on top of the base layer with a small amount of fusers glue, or another appropriate adhesive. Set the project aside to let the glue dry. (I like to use a tiny amount of white Elmer’s school glue and apply it with a tooth pick. This glue dries fast and when used in tiny amounts burns off without a trace.) Using the pattern as a guide, cut the accent pieces that make up the design you selected. Grind the cut accent pieces for a nice, clean fit. Clean the glass with water and then dry it with a towel. (I prefer to use water over detergents or other solvents that could leave reside that might burn onto the glass surface during fusing.) Glue the accent pieces to the design layer with fusers glue. Let the glue dry before moving to the next step.

Simple but beautiful!

For Cookies for Santa, Star of David and You’re a Mean One, select the appropriate power frit colors. Wearing a dust mask, sift your chosen powder evenly over the glass. Using a small dry paint brush or the tip of a pencil draw your message in the frit like you would draw in the sand. Remove any frit that might have fallen on the surrounding glass pieces with the dry paint brush.

Turkey Candle Shelter or Flower Vase How-To

 

 Let the festivities begin! Fall is a season for celebrating family, friends and feasting. At my house, the dining room table is the center of attention at this time of year. Accordingly, I like to decorate the table with a special piece of art that brings cheerful energy to our gatherings. This brightly colored turkey is the perfect adornment for such joyous occasions. It may look complicated, but it’s actually fast and easy to make.

To get started, cut out the paper pattern with scissors. To make the base, trace the turkey shape on clear glass with a marker. Cut as much of the clear glass as possible by hand. Use a glass saw to detail the inside cuts. The clear base layer can be made up of pieces if you don’t have access to a saw. Grind the clear glass to remove sharp edges and improve the shape.

For the colorful design layer, cut the pattern up with scissors. Affix the paper pieces to the appropriate colored glass with a glue stick. Cut the pieces as closely to the paper as possible. Cut a second turkey body out of patterned dichroic on clear. Then grind the cut glass pieces to improve the shapes and remove any sharp edges.

Place the clear base on a second pattern. Apply a small amount of fuser’s glue to the clear base and then assemble the colorful design layer on top. Stack the dichroic body on top. Allow the glue to dry until the pieces are secure. If you move to the next step too soon, the glass pieces will slide around when you apply the frit. This causes blurred edges that I feel distract from the design.

Using a spoon, pour a small amount of fine frit onto the turkey. Work the frit down into any gaps with a paint brush. This step gives the finished artwork a nice added detail. I selected a complimentary yellow to highlight this bold color palate. When using this technique, I intentionally pick fine frit instead of powder. The excess fine frit is easier to clean off the surface of the project than powder which tends to stick.

Next add a dichroic dot for an eye and a yellow triangle for a beak. Now for a little bling. Nip wavy Firestrips to size and place them on the turkey’s feathers for a flashy zinger.

The assembled turkey is fused and then slumped over a barrel shaped mold. The slumped turkey is then glued to the front of the clear candle shelter. Colored fused glass strips cover the remainder of the clear candle shelter to give it a festive flare all the way around.

Using a strip cutter cut 16 strips total ½” wide, 5 7/8” long out of red, orange and green glass. Cut 16 strips of iridized clear the same size. Stack the clear iridized strips on the color strips.

Fuse the turkey and strips to a full fuse temperature using the guide below.

Slump the fused turkey over the ceramic mold.

Glue the slumped turkey to the clear candle shelter with E6000 adhesive. Tape the fused glass to the clear shelter to ensure it doesn’t slide off. Let the glue dry overnight.

Glue the fused glass strips to the remainder of the clear shelter. Tape them in place. Let the glue dry overnight.

Double duty. This fancy turkey project can be used as a candle holder or a flower vase. Either way, it’s a beautiful seasonal addition to any décor.

 

Fusing Guide

Segment 1: Ramp 300 F/hr to 1300 and hold 30 min.

Segment 2: Ramp 500F/hr to 1465 and hold 10 min.

Segment 3: Ramp 9999(AFAP*) to 960 and hold 40 min.

Segment 4: Cool to room temperature.

*As fast as possible

Slumping Guide

Segment 1: Ramp 300 F/hr to 1265 and hold 10 min.

Segment 2: Ramp 9999(AFAP*) to 960 and hold 40 min.

Segment 3: Cool to room temperature.

*As fast as possible

NOTE: Kilns fire differently. Test fire these guides in your kiln and then make adjustments as needed.
