Understanding Glass Fusing Firing Guides

Firing guides are our glass fusing recipes. We follow schedules published by trusted sources to ensure we have fusing success. I’ve been fusing glass for more than 35 years. In that time, my personal firing guides have been adjusted and evolved into recipes I rely on for predictable results. Recently, taking the wise advice of a fellow fuser, (thanks Larry!) I reworked and updated my firing guides to include both 96 COE and 90 COE. Taking it one step further, I now also include Fahrenheit as well as Celsius temperatures.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m hard at work on a new glass fusing eBook. The following is an excerpt from my book. I hope you find it helpful and informative.

Understanding Firing Guides

A firing guide is a step-by-step schedule to fire glass of a certain size and thickness to achieve a specific result. Firing guides are carried out in steps called segments. Larger, thicker projects have more conservative firing guides with more segments. The rate per hour indicates how quickly the kiln should change temperature in an hour. Temperature is the target temperature the kiln will be taken to for a specific purpose. The hold time indicates how long the kiln will remain at a certain temperature to achieve the desired results.

Because every kiln fires differently, firing guides suggest you test fire the guide in your kiln and then adjust if needed. But they don’t give advice as to how to make those changes. I write new custom firing guides all the time. My advice is look at firing guides that have worked for you in the past. Decide what you want differently this time and then change either the target temperature or change the hold time at that temperature.

How to adjust the firing guides to achieve the results you want.

Change one thing at a time.

Change the target temperature by 5° one way or the other. Lower the temperature for a harder edge or increase it for a softer edge.

Or

Change the target temperature hold time by 5 minutes. Reduce the hold by 5 minutes for a harder finish or increase the hold by 5 minutes for a softer finish.

And

Compare firing guides. Identify similar patterns in the heating and cooling stages. Combine the segments that make sense for your artistic style, type of construction and the size of your kiln. Then write your own custom firing guide.

Take notes to build confidence and consistency into your kiln work Take before and after pictures to repeat your success and learn from your experience.

Firing Guides for 96 COE & 90 COE

These guides are based on my own experience and the glass manufacturer’s firing guides.

Kilns fire differently.

Test these guides and adjust them as needed to get the artistic results you want.

These firing guides are for 96 COE 7 90 COE projects 12 ” (30.5Cm.) in size or smaller made with 2 layers of glass plus accents.

TACK FUSE

1365°F (741°C) 96 COE

1300°F (704°C) 90 COE

CONTOUR FUSE

1425°F (774°C) 96 COE

1400°F (804°C) 90 COE

FULL FUSE

Secrets to Making Stand Out Art Revealed

Excerpt from Breaking Through-Making Exhibition Quality Art Video by Lisa Vogt

Are you ready to take your work to the next level?

I’m sure you’ve noticed the dramatic increase in outstanding, professional quality fused glass artwork being made by your fellow artists. You admire their originality and the advanced skills it takes to produce such striking art. But then you find yourself wondering what makes them so special. Why aren’t your pieces getting noticed?

What’s missing?

To answer that question, we first have to consider what makes artwork stand out. There are two key features that make artwork exceptional. The two elements are unique form and dramatic imagery. Design your projects with these basic concepts in mind and you’ll immediately see an increase in the desirability of your work.

Unique Form

Sculptural Fused Glass Video

Shape up! Move away from the simple square, rectangle, and circle. These shapes are tired. They have their place when making a production series where minimizing material, fabrication, and labor costs is essential for profit.

But if you want your work to rise to gallery status, give your artwork an unexpected or brand new shape. This elevates your fused glass from a practical or functional container, to a glamorous, three dimensional, fine art sculpture.

Get creative, combine slumping molds to make one-of-a-kind shapes. Use fiber paper or fiber board to change the profile of your fused glass. You’ll quickly find, the possibilities are endless.

Dramatic Imagery

Painting with Frit Video

What makes a painting memorable? They’re generally rectangular in shape, so what makes one unforgettable? It’s the subject matter, of course. Taken a step further, it’s the artist’s distinctive composition, their unique way of interpreting the focal point and the special way the scene in rendered. Give the viewer a fresh look at something familiar and they’re hooked.

There are several ways to engage the viewer and hold their attention longer with your subject matter. Render a recognizable subject in a surprising way. Use unexpected colors or add props, like a hat on a dog or a tutu on a cat. Include an interesting background that enhances the subject. Place your focal point in an unusual setting. Put a flower on the moon. Or, put the moon on a flower. Visualize a composition that extends beyond the rectangular limits of your glass canvas. And then build it with  enthusiasm that shows.

The Winning Combination

Go with the Flow Video

Combine both unique form and dramatic imagery and your work will rise above the rest and get noticed. It’s easy. Start simple with the basic shapes and add your own twist. Put notches in a square, put curves in the straight edges of a rectangle, give your circle a free form shape. Then reshape the fused glass by slumping or draping it on a combination of molds and other kiln furniture. There are no rules. Just make it your own and you’ll come out a winner.

Once you integrate these design concepts into your work, you’ll be amazed how quickly your work rises to a higher level of sophistication. And in the process, thinking in a broader scope will open the door to all new, exciting possibilities.

Happy Fusing!

Creative Slumping

The term creative slumping has a broad range of potential directions. Isn’t that awesome! We have a huge array of handling techniques to feed our ever curious artistic spirit, and challenge our glass crafting skills. For me, creative slumping means taking ready-made molds and using them in ways that result in extraordinarily unique 3-dimensional forms. The great thing about this approach is that super simple ideas applied in combination often make the most exciting pieces of art.

How do you get started?

It’s about looking at your materials with fresh eyes. Because of past experience, you easily envision the outcome of using your favorite molds. But what happens if you place the fused glass on the mold in a different direction? Or maybe next time cut your glass in a different shape? Better yet, use two molds at the same time for a single project. How will that alter your results? The answers are in test pieces.

Nothing goes to waste.

Clear glass is the least expensive glass. When I’m in the mood to experiment with creative slumping I start by planning my project shape. Then I cut that shape out of clear glass. I fuse two pieces of clear together, so I have the same thickness I would later when I transition to color glass. Then I test fire the fused glass over my mold configuration taking notes every step of the way. If my results are unexpected or undesirable I try again. Once I have the look I want, I repeat the process with color glass. I keep the clear glass samples that are successful for reference in the future. The ugly samples are broken into mosaic size pieces and used as filler in my cast projects.

If I can’t waste glass who can?

I do a lot of testing. I figure if I can’t afford to waste glass considering how much teaching I do, then who can? I cut the glass, fire the kilns, and make the mistakes, so you don’t have to. Plus, I’m stubborn. I like a challenge. When a project goes wrong, it becomes a personal mission to figure out how to make it right. And I love sharing my processes and giving you the information needed to be successful the first time.

That’s what my upcoming Creative Slumping webinar is all about. Showing you step-by-step how I come up with my ideas and how I execute them. Plus, I share my project specific firing guides that I’ve developed and tested to ensure your success. If that isn’t enough to convince you to join me, the projects are striking. Watching flat glass go from a lifeless single plane to a glistening, energetic sculptural work of art is amazingly satisfying.

I hope to see you in my Creative Slumping webinar.

Happy Fusing!

Lisa
