5 Tips to Get into Your Creative Zone

Fall is right around the corner and that means itโ€™s creative season! Creating lifts your spirit and makes you happy.

Life is busy. It can be difficult to grant yourself permission to set aside time to experience the joy of creating when there are so many demands on your time and energy. Iโ€™m here to tell you itโ€™s okay to lose yourself in your work and have fun doing it. Here are some tips to spark your artistic flame.

The creative zone is a wonderful place where new ideas are conceived, advanced techniques are tested, and innovative pieces of art are brought to life. In the creative zone time doesnโ€™t exist. Itโ€™s a beautiful realm full of wonder and surprise. Itโ€™s a place of magic we all want to visit. So, how do you produce the right environment to get to this artistโ€™s heaven on-demand? Here are some tricks to fast-track you to the zone.

1 Find your sweet spot.

Identify when you feel most productive creatively. Donโ€™t fight it. Not everyone is meant for a 9:00 to 5:00 workday. For me, my most fruitful hours are between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. And I like to work even later if Iโ€™ve gained momentum thatโ€™s getting projects in the kiln. My day starts a lot earlier than 11:00, but I like to work-out and clean house a little before I get serious about glass work. Then, I can focus on artsy tasks without distractions.

2 Free-play without a critic.

Play with your glass colors without a rigid plan. Allow your spontaneous artistic mind to wander and explore new ways to combine glass colors to make interesting blends. I pull scrap glass out and arrange it on the table in random color schemes. Then I mix them up to get even more unique design palates. This exercise is a process. Once youโ€™ve exhausted the routine combinations, itโ€™s amazing how new fresh ideas reveal themselves.

3 Take a break.

Look outside for inspiration. Exciting original art is the product of artists who actively seek out stimuli to generate new ideas. Take a walk, go to the beach, the mountains, the zoo, or the park. Exercise and fresh air nurtures your creative spirit and promotes action.

4 Sketch design ideas on paper.

You donโ€™t have to be good at drawing for this exercise to work. The process of doodling frees your mind and hushes the internal sensor that holds you back. Forge ahead. Be bold. The idea is to let the drawings come naturally. Youโ€™ll be pleasantly surprised how much this simple act empowers your artistic style. Try it!

5 Dedicate time to developing your art and your talent.

Commit to branching out and trying new techniques and methods that challenge your skills. In this uncharted territory youโ€™ll find renewed energy thatโ€™ll quickly translates into exciting new pieces of art.

Excelling in your craft is the dream of every dedicated artist. The creative zone is where we find and fine tune our own personal style. Itโ€™s where we identify with ourselves and thatโ€™s what makes you the incredible artist you are.

Remember, you have an amazing talent. Nurture and be kind to yourself. Keep trying. Always, push ahead! No matter where you are on your artistic journey, youโ€™re doing great!

5 Reasons to Draw Fused Glass Designs on the Computer

Recently I shared a video showing how to draw a hummingbird design on the computer using the Glass Eye 2000 program by Dragonfly Software. As a follow up, I thought you’d enjoy knowing the benefits of designing electronically.

One of my favorite things about glass fusing is how easily I can jump right into construction with little or no planning. If the mood strikes, I can design spontaneously looking only to the materials for inspiration and come away with a striking new project. This artistic freedom usually produces loose, freestyle patterns I love. But sometimes, I want more intricate images or designs that develop slowly from concept to construction. When thatโ€™s the case, I draw my designs on the computer.

Initially, itโ€™s time consuming to draw on the computer. But there are several advantages and reasons you might like to give it a try.

Why design on the computer?

1 Drawing on the computer greatly expands the range of your design complexity. Itโ€™s easy to draw unique compositions you might otherwise be afraid to try. You can import a photograph of a herd of horses for example. You can .draw over the picture including as much or as little detail as you want. Say you like one horse more than the others. Itโ€™s easy to copy and paste that one horse several times customizing the design to meet your vision.

Once youโ€™ve put in the effort to draw the first horse, you can repurpose the drawing for any number of uses. Maybe you want to make a piece with only a horse head. The computer drawing is quickly edited and resized for a totally new project.

2. Itโ€™s easy to test unusual color combinations on a computer-generated pattern without any waste. Iโ€™m much more likely to use a wild color palate if I can see it in advance of cutting any glass. This feature alone, has awakened an all new level of artistic expression for me.

Create a library of images.

3. As a commission artist Iโ€™m frequently asked to make the same or similar designs. Often the design is driven by regional themes. Tropical herons, dolphins, coral reef and beach scenes are popular subjects with my local clients. My commission work is one-of-a-kind. I donโ€™t make the exact same design twice. But I do borrow elements from previously drawn designs for new patterns. I take a heron from here, a fish from there, sea oats from another design. The elements are resized and regrouped to make a new original design.

Having an inventory of designs is a great way to accumulate popular images you can recycle over and over to make fresh, new compositions.

Clean, clear deigns are a powerful sales tool.

4. Clients have trouble imagining what a design will look like based solely on a verbal description. Itโ€™s easier to ensure customer satisfaction with a color rendering. I email the designs to my clients for review and approval. And if they want to make changes, they can be done quickly on the computer before Iโ€™ve invested labor or materials into building the job.

Small and big.

5. I use the Glass Eye program from Dragonfly Software. Itโ€™s known for its use for drawing stained glass patterns, but it works equally as well for fused glass patterns. I draw small simple projects as well as huge, complex commissions with the program. For the small pieces, I print a full-size pattern and build directly on that. For large scale works, I print a scale version of the design to use as a reference. Then I draw the full-size pattern by hand with a pencil on paper.

You donโ€™t have to be a professional glass artist to benefit from expanding your design approach. Whatever your skill level, beginner to advanced artists youโ€™ll find the time spent learning how to develop designs electronically is valuable. Itโ€™s an investment in yourself that will excite and elevate your artistic style.

Fused Glass Sculptures Made Easyย ย ย

What does sculptural fused glass mean anyway?

Sculptural fused glass is the creation of three-dimensional forms that rise above a flat plane. Artists create 3-D works by using multiple methods and techniques with complete freedom of materials and process.

Sounds exciting, right? All you have to do is stand your art up and itโ€™s miraculously sculptural. Sure, you can do that. The word โ€œsculpturalโ€ sounds exotic. Add it to any piece of art and suddenly it has a mysterious aura surrounding it, and a significantly higher perceived value. But like most really exceptional work that looks easy, thereโ€™s more to making impressionable art than just erecting a flat piece of fused glass.

The real difference between art and craft is the depth of immersion the creator puts into the creation of their art.

Hobbyists copy. They follow outlined directions and build pretty pieces according to a pre-tested recipe. Donโ€™t get me wrong, thereโ€™s nothing wrong with doing that. Hobbyists want to know theyโ€™ll be successful and have beautiful results. Especially after all the time and money theyโ€™ve spent on their pastime.

Iโ€™m a hobbyist when it comes to other popular activities like singing, flower arranging and astronomy. Thatโ€™s how we learn. By following the pros and picking up their tricks, we learn how to make things weโ€™re proud of and admire.

And if you become hooked, maybe you will take your hobby a step further. You try new techniques and experiment by mixing techniques or combining ideas that inspire you. This is the threshold of advanced learning and the blossoming of self-discovery. You wonder, what can I do? What can I make? How far can I go? And the real question is, what am I capable of, artistically?

Hobbyists often start a hobby to relax and enjoy quiet time. They are content to stay in the shallows where itโ€™s safe and they are successful. And thatโ€™s admirable.

Artists, on the other hand, take their commitment more seriously. Theyโ€™re drawn to a medium by an invisible magnet. From the start theyโ€™re compelled to learn as much as possible about that art form. They have every intention of progressing, to work on bigger, better, more advanced projects. They head for the deep end without looking back and, sink or swim, give it all they have.ย

What does this have to do with sculptural fused glass?

Sculptural fused glass is the product of such artists. Theyโ€™re the ones who go above and beyond. They challenge convention and push boundaries.

You may think it takes extensive experience and an impressive glass studio to be one of those pioneers. Youโ€™d be wrong. Your most valuable assets are a positive attitude, insatiable curiosity, and a fearless willingness to try. Just try. Trying is worthy of celebration and cheers.

How to get started.

I recommend making small 2 inch x 2 inch samples using different, new techniques that intrigue you. This gives you construction and firing experience with these new methods to see how they fire in your kiln. Then consider mixing methods that youโ€™d usually do independently. Take these component pieces and cut them up. Then put them back together in a new way.

Slump plain clear fusible glass over molds in unique ways. Try combining different shapes to make sculptural groupings all your own. Again, start small. You can always make a successful project larger. Once you have a winning combo slump your component pieces the same way.

Take notes and pictures so you can repeat your successes and learn from mistakes.

Your biggest obstacle is likely you. Get out of your own way. Start small. Make tiny changes. Results are results. They donโ€™t have to be monstrous to have enormous value.

If youโ€™ve come this far in your craft, if youโ€™re continually seeking inspiration, knowledge, and community, I believe you have it in you to create your own unique sculptural fused glass.

Get Sticky Guide to Glues

Glue is a great tool to simplify glass fusing construction and facilitate creative displays.

One of the most common questions I get is, What kind of glue did you use? Hereโ€™s a roundup of what I use when I use it and why.

Here’s a quick guide to when and how I use different adhesives in my work.

Succulents from Simple Pleasures Video

Glue Stick. Do not use it in the kiln.

When making intricate designs I often work from a paper pattern. This extra step greatly improves the fit  of my cut glass pieces and minimizes the amount of grinding I have to do. I use a glue stick to hold the paper pattern pieces in place while I cut and grind the glass. I apply glue to the back of the paper pattern pieces. Then I cut around the paper with my cutter. I then grind the pieces to fine tune the shapes and remove sharp edges. The water from the grinder loosens the glue so the paper easily slides off. I clean any remaining glue off the glass with water and a towel.

Fancy Feathers from Breaking Through Video

Elmerโ€™s School Glue. Safe to use in the kiln. Use in moderation.

I use Elmerโ€™s glue to hold my cut glass pieces in place while I assemble a project. It keeps my pieces from moving when I add design elements and when I carry the project to the kiln. I apply the smallest amount possible with the point of a toothpick. This small amount burns off during firing without leaving any residue behind.

That said, if I can avoid using glue on a project I do. However, if I feel using glue will improve the overall outcome, I donโ€™t hesitate to use it. Sometimes I just glue the outside border or pieces around the perimeter to reduce the amount of glue used.

Paradise Beach from Painting with Frit Video

Hair Spray. Safe to use in the kiln. Use in moderation.

Hair spray is great when you want to keep small pieces in place while assembling a project. I drip it from a needle tip applicator bottle over stringers and other tiny accent pieces. Because it is a light liquid it easily flows under the glass and then dries quickly.

I also spray the hair spray directly from the bottle over powder frit to ensure I retain an even costing of frit. I suggest you practice this technique on a piece of scrap glass. It takes a few tries to get the distance away from the frit and the spray pattern just right.

Pisces from Advanced Glass Fusing Video

E6000 Adhesive. Do not use it in the kiln.

I use E600 to glue fused components together, like a sculpture to a glass display base. Itโ€™s great for small and medium-size projects. I also use it to glue saw tooth hangers on the back of hanging wall art. Prop the glued art, so it doesnโ€™t slide off before the glue dries. I let the glue dry overnight.

Summer Nights Lantern form Creative Shapes Video

Silicone Caulk. Do not use it in the kiln.

Silicone caulk is great for medium and large size projects where I need a lot of glue. I use a caulk gun to apply the silicone along the outside edges quickly and easily. I often tape the project together to secure it until the glue dries. Electrical tape works well because it sticks to glass, and it stretches which ensures a tight clean fit.

Keep in mind not all glues are safe to use in a kiln. Some glues release toxic fumes when heated. Use adhesives that are intended for kiln use and purchased from your art glass supplier.

Of course, if you have success with a specific adhesive used outside the kiln keep using it. These suggestions are intended to expand your adhesive choices when working with glass.

I hope this roundup is helpful and prevents you from getting stuck. ย ย
